Description
APEPA: Tour of Saint-Maclou Church 3.00 pm–5.30 pm
Saint-Maclou 14270 Mézidon-Vallée-d’Auge,
WEDNESDAY 25 July
The church dates back to the 12th century, as evidenced by the medallions and the Romanesque doorway on the north façade. It is dedicated to Saint Marcouf, but is commonly referred to as the Chapel of Saint Maclou. In the nave, a stained-glass window by Pierre Bony depicts the legend of this 6th-century healing saint.
Members of the association will welcome you to show you round the church and tell you the story of Saint Marcouf’s life over a friendly drink.
Saint Marcouf, a monk and later a bishop who evangelised the Cotentin region in the 6th century, healed those suffering from scrofula (a skin disease). On his death, he passed on this power to the kings of France, who, according to tradition, healed through mere touch whilst uttering the words: ‘The king touches you, God heals you.’
